Woven vs. Embroidered vs. PVC Patches: A Buyer's Comparison

Six patch types compared on look, durability and best use — with real MOQ and turnaround.

Published October 23, 2026 · By the Stitch Official team

Custom patches come in more types than most buyers realize, and picking the wrong one for your use case usually shows up later — as a patch that looks flat in photos, curls at the edges, or doesn't hold up to the environment it's actually used in. Here's how the six types we produce compare.

Embroidered patches

The default choice for most uniforms and brand merchandise — thread-stitched detail with a classic, tactile finish that works at almost any size. If you're not sure which type fits your project, this is usually the safest starting point.

PVC patches

Molded rubber-like patches with bold, raised 3D detail and a glossy finish. They're fully waterproof and hold color well in outdoor and high-wear environments, which is why they're common in tactical and outdoor gear.

Woven patches

Best for designs with small text or fine detail that embroidery thread can't render cleanly — woven patches use thinner thread in a tighter weave, giving a flatter, more detailed finish.

Leather patches

A premium option often used on hats and bags, either stitched on directly or debossed/embossed with a logo for a branded, upscale look.

Bullion crest patches

Metallic bullion wire embroidery, traditionally used for military insignia, formal blazers, and heritage or ceremonial branding. See our full breakdown in "Bullion Crest Patches: What They Are & When to Use Them."

Chenille patches

Thick, raised, textured patches best known from varsity and letterman jackets — a distinct retro look that other patch types can't replicate.

MOQ and turnaround

Minimum order is 5 pieces across all patch types. Standard production takes 8-12 working days with rush production in 5-7 working days; bullion crest patches are hand-embroidered and take 15-21 working days, and chenille patches take 12-15 working days — see the bullion guide for details. We ship worldwide.

How to choose

Think about where the patch will actually live: outdoors and high-wear favors PVC, fine detail favors woven, a classic uniform look favors embroidered, and formal or ceremonial branding favors bullion crest. If you're still unsure, send us your design and use case — we'll recommend the type that fits.
